Dextress - The Band

The Band

Armed with a sound that's primal and in your face, Dextress will make you move no matter what they're playing.

A four person band originating in Calgary, Alberta, Dextress uses heavy hitting power chords, slick solos, and attention grabbing vocals to get their point across. Their point: That sometimes letting loose means getting a little rowdy and messy. The hangover the next day will be worth it.

Dextress began in the hot summer of 2011 suburbia with lead singer Jackson Taylor and lead guitarist Mark Janz. The band's sound has grown and changed along with the members, and the two founding musicians collaborate with the rest of the band to write all of their own material. Drawing inspiration for their sound primarily from the 80's, specifically Van Halen, Guns N' Roses, and Mötley Crüe, to name a few, Dextress is able to hit the sweet spot for modern appeal mixed with old school rock 'n' roll.

If their enthusiasm isn't already prevalent in their recorded songs, their live shows will leave you with no doubt that Dextress is passionate about what they do and that they know how to put on a show. The atmosphere shifts when the band gets on stage and doesn't let up until the lights go on again. They're dramatic without being overwhelming - a classic act but missing typical by a mile.

As AC/DC puts it, it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll and with the introduction of Eric Paulin on bass, the band has nothing to do and nowhere to go but upwards.

The Guys

Jackson Taylor Lead Vocals

Birthplace: Regina, SK

Inspirations: Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Aerosmith, Axl Rose, Steven Tyler, Sebastian Bach

Aspirations/outlook on music: "I want to leave a legacy behind and touch as many lives as I can during my short time on earth, and music is the ultimate platform for me to try to do that. I find comfort in the music I listen to, and ultimately I want to provide others the kind of solace I've found in the music of bands like Metallica and Guns N' Roses."

Musical history: "I started out as a guitar player and hated the thought of being a singer. I began playing in bands before I could string four chords together, and it soon became apparent how hard it was to find young people who were confident enough to take lead vocal duties... My band needed a vocalist, and with nobody else there to do the job, I figured I'd give it a go. My love for singing and songwriting grew from that point and I've never looked back."

Aspirations/outlook on music: "My dream is to make music a lifelong career. I hope to bring joy and comfort and a feeling of being understood to those who need it, to provide an escape from everyday headaches through my music, and ultimately to make people smile."

Musical history: "I started playing guitar at the age of 10, playing power pop tunes by groups like Cheap Trick and The Click Five. It wasn't until I heard Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" that I wanted to be a lead guitarist. I fell in love with Aerosmith and AC/DC in my younger years, and eventually found the hedonistic guitar heroes in 80s pop metal. My biggest influences in songwriting have always been Van Halen and Def Leppard, and I still can't get enough."

Gear: Kramer guitars

Eric Paulin Bass / Backing Vocals

Birthplace: Ajax, ON

Influences: Skid Row, Guns N' Roses, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin

Aspirations/outlook on music: "In the great words of Garth Algar: 'I like to play.'"
